Cosmetics and children. Myth-busting feature

Recent research by You Gov has highlighted that 89% of parents have concerns about the impact of the chemicals in their everyday products on their young child’s health. More than half would feel reassured by a better understanding of the ingredients in their products and what they do (56%). The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) would like to help ensure your readers receive factual information about their cosmetic and toiletry products, so that they can make informed decisions that are right for them and their children.

When a product scare story arises in the media, more than one in three parents avoid using the product without further investigation (35%). Whilst parents are absolutely right to question what products they use on themselves and their children, such scare stories can provide unnecessary stress at a time when balanced and impartial advice is of utmost importance.

Parents’ most common concerns

When it comes to cosmetics and toiletries, common concerns shared by parents include:

·       Is it safe to use cosmetics or colour my hair during pregnancy/ breast-feeding?

·       What does it mean if a cosmetic is paraben-free? Are parabens really safe?

·       Is it best to use chemical-free cosmetics during pregnancy/on small children?

·       The particles in talcum powder are small and easily inhaled – is it really safe to use on young children?

Who is the CTPA?

The CTPA represents the voice of the cosmetics and toiletries industry in the UK. It is made up of trained toxicologists and scientists and their consumer website: www.thefactsabout.co.uk promotes jargon-free, balanced facts on  the safety and regulation of cosmetics and toiletries. There is a specific section dedicated to baby care products and ingredients.

The CTPA doesn’t want to make parents’ decisions for them. Rather, it feels parents should have access to all the information so that they can make informed decisions themselves based on the facts.
