Anti BullyingAnti-Bullying Week!
17th – 21st November 2008
Find out what the Anti Bullying Peer Mentoring Pilot teams are doing across the regions!

http://www.peermentoring.org.uk/about/whosinvolved/ Peer Mentoring is a proven, effective and student-led programme already being used to help combat bullying in many primary, secondary and special schools throughout the UK.

Currently more than 6,000 Anti Bullying Peer Mentors are part of a pilot being run by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF). Over the next two years, these young people will be working closely with fellow students helping them to understand the impact of their words or actions on others and encouraging them to become active citizens in the school community.

Over coming week, during Anti Bullying Week (17th – 21st November), Peer Mentors will be promoting their anti-bullying messages in school through workshops, games, plays, assemblies and even film clubs! Films such as The Bridge to Terabithia and The Ant Bully are currently being used in primary and secondary classrooms as a springboard into discussions about more complex feelings and emotions.

“We know from media coverage that the effects of bullying can sometimes be tragic and that it can take many different forms … we believe that improving pupil relationships by peer mentoring can have a significant impact on bullying in schools.”

Steve Matthews, of the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF)
“I would like to congratulate all those who are already running a peer mentoring scheme and encourage anyone who is thinking about developing one … the programme is value for money and supports a number of areas - including anti-bullying measures”

Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families
